The day following the horrible massacre in Sandy Hook Elementry School many people are calling for gun control measures. I would like you to start a discussion about gun control in the comment area. I would like you to look up the statistics (accurate) regarding deaths by guns in other countries and state your opinion and stance on this current issue. Please respond to others comments on this site.

As you can see from these statistics of deaths by gun, there needs to be more gun control in all of these countries, except like the last 4, lol, and people need to stop shooting other people, even if they are mental, cause it's just damn wrong. First to comment. #boss status!!!

There need to be much stricter gun control laws in our country. A parent should be able to send their child to school without worrying that they may be shot while in their kindergarten classroom.

Based on the statistics above, the US has the highest amount of incidents. The only guns I would allowed to be kept by anyone would be a pistol compared to machine gun, since it cannot do the amount of damage that a machine gun can do in a minute. I would prefer that no guns would be carried by anyone.

This is a statistic taken from http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_mur_wit_fir-crime-murders-with-firearms . Some of these countries have many deaths due to firearms and I think as Americans we should come up with new legislation against firearms. For example, make receiving a gun harder by issuing complex tests for licenses and they must go threw mentally and physical testing to prove if they are equipped to handle a gun. Unlike this deranged man that killed little angels in Connecticut RIP babies.

I find it a little disgusting how the US is ranked among the top 5 for having the most fire arm related deaths along with some of the most dangerous countries on earth. I do not believe in the 2nd amendment. I find it useless. Nothing good has come out of someone owning a gun. Guns should be totally taken off of the market and only made available to our armed services but I am sure that would never happen. Even if it did, people would find some way of importing them illegally from other countries. I disagree with having stricter gun laws because gun laws because its not going to do much anyway. Stricter guns would probably entail more background checks but lets say the person buying a gun has never committed any previous crimes but is planning to do something with that gun in the future? You cannot predict whats going to happen, which is why they should be banned all together.

I was shocked at how low Mexico is on the list and how thus United States is higher on the list for gun control. I notice that there is huge difference between the first three countries with the rest. I don't have a problem with people owning a gun for security purposes and to me i think that everyone who is going to by a gun should tested for any psychological problems first before even registering to receive one.
In the United States the estimated number of civilians with privately owned firearms is 270,000,000. The United States are ranked number one in the world, with India in second and China in third. (www.smallarmssurvey.org)These numbers are not for the number of deaths caused by guns, but the number of privately owned firearms. I looked up the number of privately owned firearms because quite frankly the numbers were easier to to keep track of. Every website I looked at had slightly different numbers and the ranking was somewhat different each time. To me, that is sick. We can't even keep track of how many people are killed anymore. I can't rap my mind around how these people can easily get a hold of a gun. Guns were created to kill, so that's all they can ever do. In my opinion, sure they can be used for protection, but any way you swing it- guns are only going to help kill. I am for stricter gun control. I agree with Sam and Marina, one way to help control the situation is for psychological testing, and other complex tests to help restrict the ownership of guns.

From looking at the average deaths that is pointed out by the other states and based on the young 20 children who have been killed in school by a so called mentally ill 20 year old I feel that no one should have the right to carry guns. We cannot seem to control who these buyers are; therefore no one should own guns. People should be able to feel safe sending their young children to school.
Gun control seems to be a growing issue, especially in the light of recent events. South Africa is highest on the list with 31,918 deaths which is an absolutely absurd number of deaths for one country. While the United States is fourth on the list with 9,369 deaths which is also completely mind boggling. The idea that guns are so easily attenable disgusts me. I understand that people are trying to defend themselves but I don't see how well that's going considering guns are doing more harm than good. It's ridiculous to think that man kind holds such infinite power over each other. I don't believe anyone should be trusted with a gun, however it's sometimes necessary (aka law enforcement, military, ect). It's not like we can keep track of how many guns are really out their either, considering the fact that a majority of them are bought illegally. And the ones that are bought easily are fairly easy to obtain. With no real background check being made (one that includes a mental health check) we can't even trust the people who own guns legally anymore.
ReplyDeleteAnd even with the recent events I hardly believe anything will change. The government will debate over it a while, and then we'll all go back to our every day lives until something horrible seems to happen again. Change isn't very attainable in our world anymore.

Gun control is a huge issue. It's terrible to hear about someone dying and imagine how the person family feels. Not to sound like a complete ass, but if control was to increase or new gun laws were to be made, gun crimes would still happen, but when did criminals follow the law?

The issue of death by guns nationally is an enormous problem and will continue to be a real problem in the world. I don't really see any solution for the trouble that weapons cause because they will always be around and no one could completely abolish them. The numbers seem about right to me but when i see numbers for a country like Mexico with all the drug trafficking that really surprised me. But as for the United States i really think something should be done about the weapons that are all over our country and maybe we can prevent events like Newtown, or Virginia Tech.
Guns are bad ._.
ReplyDeleteWith or without an arms law, people are always going to be dying. On the same Friday in China, some crazy dude decided to take a sword and cut down on a bunch of people just like the man at Sandy Hook did. There's always going to be pointless killings and such.
Today Mr. Riley said that it's sad that our generation can just "rattle off events like these with no problems." Is it true that these mass events get worse and worse as time goes on?
Even if we took away all the guns people still die. People get bored, and society makes it seem like these killings are some kind of competition. "Who can mass murder the most people? James Holmes? Eric Harris?" GOOD JOB, SOCIETY! (y)
Not like there's anything I can do to change it. Someday... ^_^

Honestly I do not know what exactly President Obama is going to do because if he tries to pass a law he has to deal with Senate. If there is a ban on weapons there would still be illegal weapons on the streets. If I were in the president's shoes I would try to put more security guards in all schools and better security systems like alarms.

I think that the goverment needs to make it harder for people to purchase a gun. I agree that there should be psychological testing done to ensure that guns are being given to people with a healthy mindset. However, one way or another people will find a way to obtain a gun. Gun control is a hard topic because people will continue to ignore the law and do what they want.
The tragic incident that occurred at sandy hook elementary was a tragic event that devastated the lives of many families of Newtown CT. The 26 deaths were all due to the fact that a young man got his hands on a gun, which resulted in the death of many innocent lives. Statistics state that out of every one hundred people, eighty eight people own a gun. The United States of America has the highest gun ownership in the world. The US needs to make several changes to protect the lives of innocent amercians when it comes to gun control. I feel that people should not own guns for their own good because we have crazy people all over the world and around us, after this incident I also feel that I'm not safe anywhere I go except home.

It really disturbs me to see some of these numbers. It is sad how in our country we stand for freedom and safety from other countries, when we are the ones hurting ourselves. I don't see a need to have a gun in this country. Something needs to be done about gun control immediately. It's disgusting how we are supposed to have an amendment for this, but it does nothing, forget about weed and drugs, if people want to harm their own lives so be it, but enough of harming other peoples lives. The government should make it impossible to own a gun if your not protecting this country then you should not have a gun and serious consequences for the idiots who break the law anyways. Without guns the country would be stronger and if people want to protect themselves then they should go learn karate.

I think that what happened to those innocent kids in that school is horrific. First off, I don't understand why a child would be allowed to go to a shooting range, especially someone with Aspergers. It is said that people with Aspergers do not have feelings, and that just added to more devastation. After this life changing event, I think that something should actually be done about gun control, especially stricter enforcement. Even though a lot of tragic events like this one have occured, something should finally be done about it so it really shouldn't happen again.
I think that every thing that happened at sandy hook elementary was terrible. But i dont think that there should be more gun control and laws because the majority of these gun crimes are by people who do not own guns legal anyway so how would making gun laws stricter for people who love to shot guns and go hunting and do the right thing reduce the rate of gun crimes. They have to enforce more laws to get illegal guns out of the hand of people and not take legal guns away from people who do the right thing.

I don't think that any amount of gun control will ever stop mass murders. Even if you took away all the guns, what about explosives and knives. You could kill even more people by blowing up a large building. No matter what mass murders is always a problem we face in America.

I think it's vey tragic that things like school shootings or armed robberies are so common today. I believe the background check on a gun should be thorough and include a mental health check. However, even if people weren't using guns, they would still be killing each other somehow. It's not the weapons that are the real problem, it's the people. Something is wrong with these people who feel the need to go out and kill someone, or a whole bunch of people, and we should put time and money and research into getting them the mental help they need rather than how to get stricter gun control and such.
