House of Representatives Session

Please watch the following video of The House of Representative November 17th Session. In the comment area below please write down some thoughts about the video. Be specific so I know you are definitely watching the video. It is 4 hours long so I suggest you skip and fast forward some parts instead of watching the whole 4 hours (I do not expect you to watch the whole thing)

Things to keep in mind:

How is is structured (a session)?
What are they discussing that day?
Is there anything unique or did you learn anything new in the video about the HOR?
Who is speaking? What are their names and titles?
How does HOR chamber in Capital Hill look (description)

  1. The first thing I noticed was how the chamber was set up like a pyramid with the speaker of the house at the top. Some representatives presented one minute speeches concerning certain issues and opinions. For example, Representative Joe Wilson from South Carolina discussed his concerns on the attacks in Libya, and a new project called the Mathematics of Planet Earth was introduced by Representative Jerry M. McNerney from California. Furthermore, both Joe Courtney from Connecticut and Timothy J. Walz from Minnesota brought up and supported the idea of creating a Farm Bill. By the end of the day a Speaker tempore took Joe Boehner's place for the time being, and a bill was voted on and passed. It was somewhat interesting to see the bill being passed, and to watch the numbers go up; it was like watching a mini-election.

  2. I first noticed that they began their meeting with a prayer, which I find a bit presumptuous considering the people there might not all be of the Christian faith. Various representatives were discussing the attacks on Libya and what course of action should be taken. A new project to begin in 2013 was also discussed called "The Mathematics of Planet Earth" which will subjects in education such as mathematics, science, technology, and engineering to help shape humanity for the future. Scrolling down through the index, I saw that a debate also took place, as well as various one minute speeches and special order speeches. In all, the meeting seemed very formal with no room for nonsense.

  3. It started off with the speaker of the house John A Boehner had introduced the house chaplain Patrick J, Conroy who lead the house in prayer and after that the governor of California lead the pledge of allegiance. After that each member of the sided was able to make a one minute speech. Which started off with Republican Joe Wilson of South Carolina who spoke about 9/11 attack. Rep. Ted Poe spoke about how he felt that Israel should be supported. Jerry Mcnerney had introduced the idea of the mathematic earth which is a bill to be passed in 2013 that would be to solve really world issues such as,
energy freedom, medical challenges, Weather events. There where may different topics discussing that day and there were different bills that where being bought up to pass such as the farmer bill and land preservations. I found that no one was really interested in the meeting and that it was very dull.

  4. The session started out with the speaker of the house telling what state representative to speak and how long, which was about 2 minutes. There was a speaker present from each state to represent on different issues and talk about laws they’d like to pass. Representative Joe Wilson from South Carolina discussed his concerns on the attacks in Libya, and a new project called the Mathematics of Planet Earth was introduced by Representative Jerry M. McNerney from California. There was a bill intended to give stability to farmers and help prices go down. An issue discussed was lowering the price of milk so it wouldn’t reach $7 per gallon. The House of Representatives on capital hill is a large room with an American flag; seating for the Speaker at the top and the other representatives below him.

Conroy. the speaker of the house john Boehner was on top. a project disscused was to begin in 2013 was called "The Mathematics of Planet Earth". this will help people grow in areas like math and science to better the children of the future. also many representatives were discussing the attacks on Libya and how they should go about it in the furture for other attacks. this meeting was very structed due to the amount of people in the house and it was nothing like british parliment.

  6. We are suppose to have separation of church and state the session of congress starts of with a prayer. The senator who spoke first spoke about the problems and attacks in Libya. They also talked about trade agreements and Russia entering the WTO and that America should force Russia to follow the rules of the agreement. Russia entering the WTO can create jobs in America and helped American business.

  7. That was boring :D
I'm glad the session began with a prayer, somehow it kind of creates a sense of union. The senators talked about a whole bunch of stuff regarding foreign policies.
People looked extremely bored (except the speakers) and a lot of people were walking around (which was more than a little distracting). I wonder where they were going..
A lot of my classmates said that the whole session seemed formal. I don't think it looked very formal at all. I suppose someone could have fallen asleep or started snacking or reading or basically not paying attention with no one to really mind them.

  8. First off I think that the whole session was boring. It was nice how the whole thing started with a prayer and the pledge of allegiance. Throughout the whole debate I did not see speaker of the House John Boehner only before it began. The representatives were allowed to open the "floor" with a general statement or issue affecting the nation. The major debate was about something to do with trade in relation to Russia. The bill was passed by the yea and nea system.
I agree with representative Joe Courtney from Connecticut and representative Timothy J. Walz of Minnesota because I like farms and I like milk and I'm not paying $7.00 for some milk. The farmers indeed do work hard so this bill better get passed. The chamber itself is very big and the wall behind the speaker's chair looked beautiful. I just wonder where Mr. Boehner went?

  9. This session was very boring. I could not pay attention to most of they things they were saying because i was falling asleep while watching. All i remember is that they talked about Russia. It was done in an orderly fashion. The people were very respectful to each other. The people who mainly watch these things are old people who got nothing to do and bingo night got cancelled. Other than that I don't see a lot of people watching this and staying awake.

  10. This was very boring for me and I bet it was for them as well. In the first thing they spoke about Russia and their obligations. Also it was about exports. There were a few parts where they would just be silenced in the video. However these people in the house of representatives do have it completly organized time wise which surprises me with the video being so long. The speakers were from all over and they show that they have different veiws and opinions that they made known to the rest of the group.

  11. The session starts with a prayer by House Chaplain, Rev. Patrick J. Conroy and pledge. Speaker of the House, Representative John A. Boehner, introduces Representative Joe Wilson, a South Carolina republican. He discussed the terrorist attack in Benghazi. Representative Ted Poe, a Texas republican, discussed the rockets that were shot from Gaza to Israel. Representative Erik Paulsen, A Minnesota republican, spoke of how Minnesota exported $71 million goods to Russia. The Russian marketplace holds potential for future increase exports and more Minnesota jobs. In August, Russia became member of the WTO and gave access to 142 million potential customers.
From the video I learned that each representative only had one minute to present their speech (some had two minutes). I would have thought that they were allowed to speak for more than that, but it is reasonable because there are many speeches that need to be heard. More than one minute would be very time consuming.
The HOR chamber in Capital Hill has the Speaker of the House placed in front overlooking the representatives.

  12. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. The session begins with a prayer from Rev Patrick J. Conroy and the Pledge of Allegiance lead by the Speaker of the House.John A. Boehner. It is followed by one minute speeches and debates on specific topics about the nation. They vote and pass a bill, oh and they have recess. Some of the topics of discussion were the attacks in Libya, the mathematics earth bill, seven dollars for a gallon of milk which is ridiculous which led to the farm bill being discussed. Help and support for Israel, trade relations with Russia and WTO and the possibility of future success. Some of those who spoke include Minnesota Erik Paulsen, Joe Courtney from Connecticut, Jerry Mcnerney from California, Ted Poe from Texas, and South Carolina Joe Wilson. There were only one minute for speeches but one thing I noticed from Joe Courtney was that he said I yield back the balance of my time, which means if you say whatever it is you have to say and you still have time you could assign your time to another speaker or whoever needs it. The chamber looks like a triangle chart with the Speaker of the House with a nice big comfy chair on top and other reps with smaller chairs below him. It looks like a three tier cake and in the back their is a big American flag and four pillars with designs in between them and above it read IN GOD WE TRUST. Also they call the Pro Tempore Judy Biggert, MADAM SPEAKER.

  13. The session boring but started off by the speaker of the house, Republican John A Boehner, introducing the House Chaplain. The House Chaplain, Rev. Patrick J. Conroy, led the house in prayer. Then The Speaker of the house introduced the governor of California. The governor of California led the pledge of allegiance. Then the session started of with Republican Joe Wilson of South Carolina. He was speaking about the terrorist attacks on September 11th .Then Democrat David Cicillina of Rhode Island spoke about the veterans. There was also a talk about a big topic called the WTO commitment that the want to pass which would level the ground with Americans to trade. I was shocked that there was a speaker from each state representing the state on issues and talking about bills that they would like to be passed. The HOR in capital hill is a large room that has sits for the Speaker at the top, and other representatives at the bottom

  14. The video to me was not interesting and too long as well. What I notice was that it was nice that they had said prayer and the plegde. But another thing is that the meeting is done in an orderly way. They are discussing adding bills that will help the legislation. Some people who talkingin the house was Rev.Patrick Conroy, The houses'Chaplin etc. Most of the House was mainly talking about the same idea and gives everybody in the house a chance to speak. The House chamber look like a big room that have many wall with an opened space

  15. I thought it was rather strange that the video started out with a priest/chaplain saying a blessing being that our country supposedly stands for separation of church and state. A lot of members of the house were asking for immediate consideration for their bills yet it didn't look like much was going to get done. James P. McGovern I felt like had a strong case for the bill of the Magnitzky act. Other than that the rest of the speakers spoke very slow and annoying and really didn't have much important input for the bill

  16. The session started with a prayer and the pledge of allegiance even though there is supposed to be a seperation of the church and state. They then talked about the trade relations in Russia. Erik Paulsen, a Republican from Minnesota talked about how we exported $71,000,000 worth of goods to Russia. Most of the representatives had at least a minute or two to talk about what they needed to talk about. Joe Courtney talked about the farm bill with Erik Paulsen which helped prices of products go down. All in all the whole thing didn't affect me in anyway. The house's chamber looked very big and everyone and everything was set up very nicely and structured.

  17. The session starts with a prayer by the House Chaplain and then the Pledge of Allegiance. The Speaker of the House told the representatives who should speak and how long they could speak for. The Speaker of the House sits at the top and everybody else is beneath him. There were discussions about the attacks on Libya, a new project called the Mathematics of Planet Earth, a farm bill, foreign policies, the weather, energy freedom, etc. It seemed to be very orderly. Everybody there looked very bored.

  18. The Session is started out by a prayer by the House Chaplain, Rev. Patrick J. Conroy and then followed by the pledge of allegiance. That day they discussed the approval of bill H.R. 6156 "jackson vanik bill" . Something new that I learned about the HOR from watching the video is that their sessions are very long and boring. I also didn't know that they had debates. People who were speaking... Congresswoman Judy Biggert, Ileana Ros -Iehtinen, and Congressman Joe Courtney. The HOR Chamber look very huge and spacey. Alot of seats were left empty, and all the chairs face towards the speaker of the house.

  19. The session starts off with a prayer offered by the House Chaplain, Father Conroy. Next, Mr. McNerney led members of the House in saying the pledge. Representatives began bringing up issues and they had the floor for one minute to make their point. The first representative speaks about Libya. Some other issues brought up during this were the introduction of the Mathematics of Planet Earth project and representatives wanting to pass a farm bill. I noticed the set up of the session has the Speaker of The House sitting at the top.
